How to Travel Safely During Covid-19
After months of being cooped up in our homes many of us are ready to head back out into the world and hit the road. Now that the country is starting to open up again how do we travel safely by car during Covid-19?
Step One: Pick a safe destination
Consider picking a destination with plenty of open space and fresh air. The United States has incredibly beautiful national parks, like Yellowstone, which are so worthy of your visit. They would be the perfect destination to satisfy any travel desires while allowing you to stay safe and socially distanced in some of the most beautiful places on Earth.
Step Two: Get a test or quarantine for 14 days
The most important part of traveling during the pandemic is being positive that you are not going to transmit Covid-19 to others. So get a test before you plan to go and/or quarantine for 14 days before the start of your trip. Make sure you get the test early enough to allow time for the results to come in!
Step Three: Take the right safety precautions
Before you go you must get a mask/face covering to protect yourself and others. You will most likely need this to enter anywhere along your trip. You should also consider grabbing disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer. Use the wipes to grab gas pump handles and wipe down key pads before using them at gas stations. You can also use the wipes to open doors and flush toilets along your drive. Also regularly wipe down your phone, steering wheel, shifter and other frequently touched places. You should use hand sanitizer and wash your hands whenever you come in contact with others. In addition to these important safety items grab anything else you might need for your trip on our Gear page.
Step Four: Bring snacks
One of the ways you could expose yourself to Covid-19 while traveling is getting food at restaurants and drive throughs even if you are only getting take-out. Most restaurants follow CDC safety guidelines but it’s better to limit your exposure to others by packing your own food. If it is a longer trip, bring a cooler to keep your food fresh. If you bring a cooler this also allows you more flexibility with what you can bring on your trip to eat.
Step Five: Figure out where you’re sleeping
The most socially distanced way to sleep while traveling during Covid would be to camp. You can use a hammock or tent and set up in national parks or campgrounds along your route. This will take pre-planning so make sure you plan your route before you set out. If you would rather stay in a hotel, research in advance the social distance guidelines for checking-in. Many hotels are doing a great job to provide a safe way to get access to your room without contact with anyone.
Step Six: Arrive!
Once you have made it to your destination, if you have done all that you can to limit your exposure and that of others then you have succeeded at traveling safely during Covid-19! Have a great time on your socially distanced adventure and make sure to capture the beauty around you.
